Empowering Accessibility Beyond Limits

Who We Are:

Above and Beyond Labs (ABL) is a nonprofit organization building the next generation of training, technology, and accessible innovation for blind and low-vision people.

Grounded in the philosophy that blindness is a characteristic—not a limitation—ABL is developing programs rooted in Structured Discovery, accessibility engineering, and practical skill-building. Our work is guided by blind leadership and lived experience, with a focus on independence, high expectations, and real-world outcomes.

While many of our initiatives are currently in development, ABL is actively laying the foundation for programs such as the Above and Beyond Innovation Center for the Blind (ABICB)—a future Structured Discovery training center integrating blindness skills, assistive technology, and accessible makerspaces.

Today, our public-facing work includes the Blind Access Blog, where we share insights on accessibility, assistive technology, and inclusive design while amplifying blind perspectives. As our programs grow, ABL will expand from thought leadership into immersive training, hands-on innovation, and community-based learning opportunities.

What We Do

Above and Beyond Labs is building programs, tools, and training that expand independence, confidence, and opportunity for blind and low-vision people.

Our work focuses on developing future-facing initiatives that combine Structured Discovery philosophy, accessibility engineering, and practical skill-building. While many of our programs are currently in development, our efforts are guided by real-world needs identified by blind professionals, educators, and technologists.

Our Work Includes:

Accessible Product & Tool Development

Designing and prototyping adaptive tools—such as tactile learning materials, accessible games, and hands-on STEM resources—that support non-visual learning and independent exploration.

Assistive Technology Education & Training

Developing training models and curricula focused on screen readers, Braille technology, mobile accessibility, and mainstream tools—centered on efficiency, confidence, and real-world use.

Accessible Smart Home & Technology Solutions

Exploring accessible smart-home and IoT solutions that prioritize usability, privacy, and independence for blind users, with accessibility built in from the start.

Inclusive Learning & Educational Resources

Creating adaptive educational materials and knowledge-sharing platforms that make learning more inclusive while raising expectations for what blind people can do.

How Your Support Helps

Donor support is essential to building Above and Beyond Labs and turning our vision into reality. Every contribution helps lay the groundwork for programs, spaces, and tools designed to advance independence, opportunity, and accessibility for blind and low-vision people.

Your support directly funds the development and launch of core initiatives, including the future Above and Beyond Innovation Center for the Blind (ABICB). Contributions help us plan and equip an accessible innovation and training environment—envisioned to include tools such as 3D printers, Braille embossers, CNC machines, vacuum formers, and adaptive software—so blind people can learn, create, and innovate non-visually.

Donations also support the design of training curricula and educational resources, including assistive technology instruction, Braille literacy development, and accessibility-focused skill building. These efforts are focused on preparing blind individuals for independence, leadership, and careers in fields such as accessibility, technology, and inclusive design.

In addition, donor funding allows us to expand our current public-facing work, including the Blind Access Blog, which raises awareness, shares practical knowledge, and amplifies blind perspectives while our larger programs are under development.

Your generosity also helps remove barriers to participation by supporting future scholarships, outreach efforts, and community engagement—ensuring that financial circumstances do not limit access as programs come online.

Every dollar invested in Above and Beyond Labs helps build sustainable, blind-led programs rooted in high expectations and real-world outcomes. Together, we are creating a future where accessibility is not an afterthought, but a foundation—and where blind people have the tools, skills, and confidence to go above and beyond.
